I couldn't find out a great deal about Williams except that
he was the #3 starter on 2008 NCAA Division II champion Mount Olive. He
was drafted as a senior and signed shortly after the draft. He
pitched out of the State College bullpen and was erratic, which made him one of
the Spikes' better pitchers. As an example,
he had a stretch near the end of the season when
he
allowed runs in six straight appearances, 12 ER in 10 IP overall.
In his next three appearances he allowed no runs and fanned 11 in just
4.2 IP. The K rate at least was very
good. Williams did not have a platoon split. He returned to State College for 2009 and
pitched mainly in short relief, both of which probably indicate that the Pirates don't regard
him as a prospect just now. He had pretty much the same year as 2008 except
for a lower K rate. Current management isn't very
big on keeping players
at the same level year after year, as their predecessors did, so Williams may get
a shot at low A in 2010. If not, he may be out of the organization.
