The
Braves drafted Oliver twice but failed to sign him as a DFE.
The Pirates managed to lure him away from a commitment to Arkansas.
He throws a fastball in the mid- to upper-80s and a curve. Although
he was listed on the opening roster for State College, he never appeared
in a game anywhere, instead being placed on the disabled list. In
2008 he joined the Hickory rotation in late April, starting four games and pitching better than the ERA indicates. That's especially true considering he was debuting in full season ball. Unfortunately, he didn't pitch again during the season. He wasn't placed on the DL, but I have to think he was hurt. I don't know what the injury was. Hopefully he'll return to West Virginia in 2009.
