Pereira had a strong season in his second
VSL year, then spent 2008 in the GCL, making him a rare
Latin American player at Bradenton who wasn't old for the level. According
to Baseball America, he has a good curve and
change, and an adequate fastball. He pitched even better in the GCL
than he had in the VSL and improved after the early part of the season. At
State College in 2009, Pereira struggled early but gradually improved, allowing
15 earned runs and 11 walks in his first 12 IP, but
posting
an
ERA of 2.15 over his last 37.2 IP. He remained hard to
hit and fanned even more batters, but his walk total
skyrocketed, probably the result of more experienced hitters laying off
breaking stuff out
of the strike zone. That could become an increasing problem for him
as he moves up. He's an extreme flyball pitcher, with a groundout to air out
ratio of 0.87 in 2008 and 0.57 in
2009. That also could become a problem. He should be at West Virginia in
2010.
