The Pirates selected Santos, along
with RHPs Rafael Quintero and Gerardo Esparza, in
the minor league phase of the 2008 Rule 5 draft. The Yankees signed Santos
for a $300,000 bonus, which was a very large one then, so
they must have thought highly of him. His career got sidetracked by injuries, although
I don't have any specifics and I don't know how much he was
able to pitch prior to 2008. Whatever the problems may have been, they were
enough to keep him from making it to US ball before he became eligible for the Rule
5 draft. He throws in the low 90s with a good change. His numbers in the
DSL in 2008 were obviously very good, but he was a little old for
that league so he'll need to show he can do it at higher levels. I was hoping the
Pirates would send him directly to State College rather than starting him in
the GCL, but they didn't.
