The
Pirates
regarded Teller as one of their better Latin American prospects.
Judging from the VSL numbers, he has very good stuff but can't
always find the plate. I've seen him at Pirate City and he throws fairly
hard for a LHP, especially a small guy, at around 90-91 MPH. In 2006,
Teller led the VSL in opponents' BA and was third in K/9. He was
a little old for a guy who had yet to graduate from the VSL, but he probably
wouldn't have had the same level of competition as a
kid in Nicaragua as, say, a Dominican kid would've had.
He was in training camp in
March 2007 but didn't pitch anywhere all year. I have to think he was hurt. He made the GCL roster in 2008 and the team brought him along slowly. He pitched less than two innings in June, then struggled in July, walking nearly a batter an inning. He pitched very well in August, though, walking only two in 10.1 IP with an ERA of 1.74. Hopefully it's a sign he's healthy and making progress. He seems most likely to head to State College next year, but it's not improbable that he could see some time at West Virginia.
