According
to Baseball America, Biela was a catcher in
high school, although I've also read that he played LF. The Pirates played him in the OF after signing him away from a commitment to Illinois State. He opened in Bradenton and had a good season. He played at State College in 2008 and got off to a good start, hitting .355 in July, but he hit only .189 after that. His plate discipline remained good, but he showed almost no power at all throughout the season. Since he's limited to LF and doesn't have good speed, he's going to have to add power or hit for a very high average. Under the previous regime he'd probably have returned to State College, but he may end up at West Virginia instead as current management promotes players more aggressively.
