White was an effective two-way player for the Army. For much of his career he was the team's best hitter while also serving as a rotation stalwart. He went 19-8, 2.99 in his first three years, although his pitching hit a snag in his senior year. The Pirates drafted him as an outfielder. He signed under an Army policy that allowed an athlete to pursue an athletic career while fulfilling his military service by undertaking activities such as recruiting. He wasn't initially a starter at State College, but quicky hit his way into the leadoff spot every day and for a while was about the only bright spot on a frightfully bad team. The Army, however, changed its policy and required White to report for duty elsewhere. The Pirates retain his rights, so it's conceivable he could give it another try after he finishes his military service, but that's a long way off.
