Hernandez broke out in a big way in 2009.  It's not often a guy puts up a slugging average that's higher than any other two years of his career combined.  He spent 2005-06 at Long Beach State, but he was ruled academically ineligible and transferred to Texas.  It's worth remembering, when looking at Hernandez' gaudy power stats for 2009, that he didn't show that power until he was two years older than most of the competition he was facing.  He signed quickly after the draft and opened at State College.  The Pirates were probably hoping he'd provide some offense for the Spikes, but he suffered an ankle injury early in the season and appeared in only eight games.  He'll probably return to State College in 2010, although a good showing in spring training could get him to West Virginia.
