Laboy's selection in the 2005 draft broke the Pirates' long
string of college selections. He was drafted as a leadoff type who hit for
a high average in HS. He was on the USA 18-under junior national team
roster in August 2004, then was injured for part of 2005. He signed
shortly after the draft and did nothing of note in the GCL his first year.
He showed a lot of improvement at that level in the first few weeks in 2006,
then got promoted to a Williamsport team that was desperate for hitters who
could just get over the Mendoza line. He didn't hit much there, but to a
team that's hitting .229 overall, a .249 hitter probably looks good. He
played all three OF positions, but the lack of power makes him unsuitable for
anywhere but CF.
Laboy started
2007 in extended spring training, then joined Hickory around mid-season.
He made progress, particularly late in the season, as he hit 359/393/474 in
August. He still has only limited power and doesn't get on base enough,
although he at least doesn't fan much. He played mostly in the corners,
with Alex Presley in center. He
opened 2008 at Lynchburg, but was overmatched and the Pirates sent him back to Hickory, where he stayed the rest of the year. He showed more power and better patience than previously, although his average dropped. He missed some time after being hit with a pitch. Laboy played some in CF at both 2008 stops, but primarily played the corners. He may get another shot at a starting job at Lynchburg in 2009, but he looks more like an organizational player now.
