The Pirates acquired Blackwell as the PTBNL from the Royals in the deal for Mark
Redman that also brought in Jonah Bayliss. Blackwell pitched well in his brief
time with the Royals, with good K rates. He throws from a low three-quarters
angle, which will no doubt lead to him being confused with Chad Bradford if he
reaches the majors. Blackwell's fastball registers around 90, and he throws a
slider and a change, the latter helping him against LH hitters. He's a strong
groundball pitcher. There were some concerns about Blackwell's arm after the
2005 season, leading to an MRI. If it wasn't the Pirates, you'd assume that the
fact that he was included in the trade indicated that the test showed nothing.
Blackwell should open 2006 with Lynchburg, but the Pirates may be hoping that
he'll move quickly to add some relief options.
