Hernandez went to junior college, then spent two years at
South Carolina. He didn't pitch much there until his senior year,
when he went 5-5, 3.32, with 76 hits, 27 BBs, and 52 Ks
in 84.0 IP, pitching mainly in relief. His fastball reaches the low 90s and he
has a good slider, which is his out pitch. The one time I saw him pitch,
he threw only a couple changeups. Hernandez put up excellent numbers with Williamsport,
including very good hit and K rates. He spent 2004 as Hickory's closer. He was
erratic, at times either getting hit hard or having trouble throwing strikes.
For the most part, though, he had a good year, with an especially high K rate.
He spent 2005 with Lynchburg, serving as closer about half the year and also
missing a little time due to injury. He got hit harder than he had at lower
levels—the usual pattern for breaking ball specialists—although he
also continued to fan over a batter an inning. He might or might not get a
chance at Altoona next year.
