Franklin was considered a good relief prospect prior to missing 2003 due to Tommy John surgery.  The Phillies put him on their 40-man roster anyway, but he didn't pitch well after his return and they removed him.  The Pirates signed him a couple weeks after the Cardinals released him, to fill in at Altoona after Brady Borner retired.  Before the injury Franklin had an effective sinker that reached the low 90s and produced a lot of ground balls.  His slider was regarded as a work in progress.
