Giese was always very effective until he had a bad year in 2005.  He obviously has outstanding control, which can be enough to register a lot of strikeouts in the low minors, but presumably he doesn't have great stuff.  As far as I can tell, he's never been considered a prospect.  He was pitching well for the Phillies in 2006, but they released him and he signed with the Pirates.  He'll probably fill in at Altoona or Indianapolis.
