The Pirates signed Martin, a soft-tossing lefty, after the Expos cut him loose. Their reason for picking him up obviously can't be found in the numbers, as he was awful in the Expos' system. Aside from the obvious control problems, he threw 9 WPs in just 40 IP in 2003 and 9 more in 57 IP in 2004. He started 2004 in the Lynchburg bullpen, where he continued to struggle with the strike zone, although he didn't give up many hits. He filled in for a shorthanded Nashville team late in the season, with unsurprising results. The Pirates don't have many LH pitchers at the lower levels, so they returned him to Lynchburg to open 2005. He got hit much harder while continuing to struggle with the strike zone, although he fanned a lot more hitters. He also had a brief, unsuccessful stint at Altoona. He'll probably take his left-handedness back to Lynchburg again in 2006.
