Heisel signed with the Pirates shortly before the 2005 draft. He was eligible
as a 5th-year senior. His ERA his senior year is misleading, as 19 of the 34 runs
he allowed were unearned. Despite the heavy emphasis on drafting pitchers in the
first two years of Dave Littlefield's administration, the Pirates' pitching depth
in the low minors is not good, leading to the need for them to sign NDFAs like
Heisel to eat innings. He did a respectable job for Williamsport and will likely
fill in wherever there's a need at the lower levels in 2006.
