Jacobsen is a RHP who relies primarily on command of his pitches. He has a good sinking fastball that reaches as high as 93, but more often is around 89-90. Unlike some control artists, he's quite willing to pitch inside. He doesn't, however, change speeds a great deal. Jacobsen was one of the Carolina League's more effective pitchers in 2002, with good #s except for a K rate that was a little low. He was just as effective at Altoona in 2003, finishing second in the league in ERA, but this time his K rate was very low. Like Mike Connolly, he was sent back to AA despite his strong performance, probably due to a perceived low ceiling. And, like Connolly, he had a bad year, getting hit hard at times, although he increased his K rate. He was shut down early in the second half with a sore shoulder, so his problems may have been injury-related. He didn't have surgery and started 2005 in the Altoona bullpen. He did OK there, but after a few weeks went on the DL with continued shoulder problems. When he came back late in the season, he first did a rather lengthy rehab in the GCL, and then the Pirates sent him to Lynchburg to help the Hillcats down the stretch and in the playoffs. If he's healthy, he'll presumably return to Altoona in 2006.
