The Pirates signed Roach after Tampa Bay cut him loose. He was sent to Altoona to replace Paul Maholm. He's had some good ERAs in the minors, but his peripheral stats were never very good, so his struggles recently aren't very surprising. He got hammered at a 308/362/500 rate for Altoona, which is especially bad considering the amount of AAA experience he has. He became a free agent after the season, but re-signed with the Bucs and will probably head back to Altoona. As short as they are on pitching prospects below AAA, it seems as though the Pirates should have been able to find better options for roster filler.
