Salas was a power-hitting OF/DH in college, and also pitched in relief. The Pirates drafted him as a pitcher, probably with the idea of developing him as a lefty specialist. They signed him shortly after the draft. He throws a high-80s fastball and a big breaking curve. He started off as a closer at Bradenton and did well there, as would be expected from a college player. He was promoted to Williamsport, where he had trouble throwing strikes. In 2005 he again split the season between the two short-season teams, doing well in both places in very limited action. He should be at Hickory or Williamsport in 2006.
