Torrealba pitched well as Bradenton's closer for part of the 2002 season, then
had an excellent season as a starter at Williamsport. He's very similar to
Julio Guerrero with maybe a little more velocity: a sinker/slider pitcher,
throwing in the low 90s consistently. He didn't run up huge K totals in the
NY-P, but allowed very few baserunners and narrowly missed being included in the
league's top 20 prospects. He turned out to be a year older than the team
originally thought, so he was just a little old for short season ball. He wasn't
nearly as successful at Hickory, serving as a swing man and getting hit fairly
hard, with a very low K rate. He nevertheless started 2005 in the Lynchburg
bullpen, where he continued along the same lines, allowing a lot of hits, not
walking many batters, and fanning very few. The Pirates sent him back to Hickory
at mid-season to help out a terrible Crawdads team. He was fairly effective as
a starter, with the same weak peripheral stats as always. Like so many of the
pitchers at the lower levels of the system, he hasn't shown the ability to
advance to higher levels, and so will probably settle in as an organizational
guy in class A.
