The Pirates acquired Santos as a Rule 5 selection from the Royals.  They had signed him to a minor league deal after the Brewers designated him for assignment and he elected to become a free agent.  He obviously cleared waivers first, so there must not have been any interest in him.

Santos throws a large variety of pitches, with the best one being an overhand curve.  He's never been a dominating pitcher and made halting progress through the minors.  Since he reached the upper minors, he's tended to allow a lot of hits and, at times, too many walks.  His K rate was outstanding in 2002, but has been unimpressive the rest of his career.  He was expected to compete with Ian Snell for the 5th spot in the rotation, but Kip Wells' vascular surgery opened a second spot, leaving Santos a heavy favorite to win at least one.  He ended up in the rotation despite a poor spring in which he had nearly twice as many hits allowed as innings pitched.
