Allen was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 32nd round of the 1998 draft, but he went to college rather than sign. He signed with the White Sox after being drafted in the supplemental first round in 2001. He was considered a project at the time, as he'd reached 97 with his fastball, but had an erratic delivery and needed work on offspeed stuff. He struggled badly with the Sox, with especially dismal BB and K #s. He also didn't show the velocity he'd shown in college. He made some progress with those problems in 2004, when he shifted to the bullpen. The change probably let him focus more on just throwing his fastball. The Sox cut him loose nevertheless. He opened 2005 with Lynchburg, but pitched in only a few games, got hammered, and went on the DL for the rest of the year. He could resurface in 2006.
