Youman was signed as a draft-and-follow and dominated NY-P hitters in his debut.
He was old for the league, however, and after pitching well for roughly the first
half of the year he struggled for Hickory in 2003. He retained his high K rate
but allowed a lot of runners and struggled with his control. He was better
overall at Lynchburg in 2004. His control improved, although it still was a
little weak, and he allowed fewer hits. His K rate dropped. Youman was called
up to Altoona for the playoffs, although that may have had more to do with the
weakness of the Curve bullpen than with him. He spent 2005 there and had an
erratic season. Overall, he posted mediocre H, BB and K stats. He got called
into duty as a starter late in the season and, surprisingly, pitched very well,
going 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA in 5 starts. Youman throws a fastball in the mid- to
upper-80s, changes speeds fairly well and has a good curve. He hasn't really
shown himself to be a prospect, but the Pirates seem to like him, possibly
because he's a big lefty. He's eligible for the Rule 5 draft, but it seems
unlikely the Pirates would lose him. He could open 2006 in either AAA or AA.
