Adcock came to the Pirates along with RHPs Aaron Pribanic and Brett Lorin, C/1B Jeff Clement and SS Ronny Cedeno for SS Jack Wilson and RHP Ian Snell. Baseball America rated him the 24th best prospect in the Mariners' system going into 2009. His best pitch is a hard curve and he also throws an average, 88-92 mph fastball and a changeup. Seattle sent him back to low A after he struggled in his first taste of high A ball in late 2007. His 2008 season, though, was interrupted by a sprained elbow. His 2009 numbers don't mean a lot, because they were compiled at High Desert in the California League, which is the best hitters' park in the best hitters' league in organized baseball. High Desert has long been notorious for wreaking havoc with the ERAs and psyches of young pitchers with its frequent football-like scores, including a 33-18 game in 2009. Adcock's ERA was 6.39 at home and 4.82 on the road.
Adcock headed to Lynchburg after the trade. He piggybacked some games with Ronald Uviedo, as the Pirates were concerned about both pitchers' workloads being much heavier than the previous year's. He actually wasn't helped by the switch in leagues, although his high ERA after the trade was largely the result of one meltdown in which he allowed six earned runs in one inning. The Pirates will have to decide whether he's ready for AA in 2010.
