The Pirates signed Aguirre out of Mexico early in 2008.
He didn't exactly set the world on fire there in 2007. He opened
2008 in extended spring training, but eventually filled in with Lynchburg,
pitching in relief, and later spent about a month in the Hickory rotation.
He obviously wasn't prepared for the Carolina League, but he pitched respectably
at Hickory. He didn't allow too many runners there but was hurt by gopher
balls. He seems to be part of a trend by the team's new management to
sign pitchers out of Latin America to fill the holes in the lower level staffs
left by the team's miserable performance in drafting and developing pitchers under Dave Littlefield. Aguirre will probably fill in somewhere in class A in 2009.
