Amato got consistently hammered in college, mainly as a mopup reliever.  He also had bad K and BB numbers, not to mention some oddly coincidental ones in 2006-07.  The Pirates signed him anyway; they've shown a growing obsession with college hurlers who had poor track records.  So far, none have gone anywhere as pros.  Amato did well against the younger competition in the GCL, then pitched very well in three appearances for State College.  He returned to State College in 2008 and pitched poorly.  For some strange reason, he was heavily used in the first week or so of the season, but consistent shellings seemed to cure the team of that pattern.  The Pirates sent him to the GCL in late July, where he had little trouble with the much younger hitters.  If he's still around in 2009, he'll pop up somewhere in the low minors as bullpen filler.
