Antelo was one of a number of college seniors whom the Pirates drafted in 2005. He put up good numbers in his last collegiate year, but it's hard to assess what those numbers mean since he didn't play in a major conference. He had a solid debut season with Williamsport-his overall #s were better than his ERA, as opponents batted only 217/294/329 against him. (This has to be taken in context, as offensive numbers are always very low in the NY-Penn League.) He throws in the low 90s, with a high-effort motion, and also throws a changeup. Antelo opened 2006 in the Hickory rotation, but didn't last long. He ended up pitching in relief, in between stints on the DL. He got hit hard, especially by LH batters, who slugged nearly .550 against him. His ERA was between 6.00 and 6.89 every month until July, when it was 8.74. He finally had a good month in August, posting a 3.38 ERA.
Surprisingly, Antelo opened 2007 in the Lynchburg bullpen
and made some progress—his stats were inflated a bit by the one start, in which he allowed ten hits and four earned runs over four innings. For some reason, he pitched only sparingly, making either five or six appearances in every month except June, when he made eight. June also was his best month by a wide margin. Back at Lynchburg in 2008, Antelo took a big step backward. His walk and K numbers at Lynchburg were good but he got hit very hard. He struggled badly while filling in at Altoona. He was used mainly in mopup roles at both places. His stuff seems to be decent enough that the Pirates have given him some chances, so he'll probably be back in a similar role in 2009.
