Simon spent three years at UCLA before he went to San Diego State.  He obviously had serious control problems throughout his collegiate career.  Although he didn't give up a huge number of hits, a lot of them went for extra bases.  He does throw hard, generally about 92-94, but he doesn't have a useful secondary pitch.  Simon signed quickly and pitched in relief in the GCL, where the younger hitters batted .321 against him.  He did strike out a batter an inning and show much better control than in college.  He moved up to State College and served as more or less the backup closer to Ronald Uviedo.  He had a good year, making a lot of progress with his control problems and fanning hitters at a very high rate.  He seems to be an extreme flyball pitcher, with a GO/AO ratio of 0.84 in 2006 and 0.34 in 2007.  He seemed ready for Hickory, but he wasn't on any roster to open the season. He could be hurt, but hopefully he'll reach Hickory soon.
