I couldn't find much pre-draft info on Beckman beyond a reference to him throwing in the upper-80s as a HS senior. He actually was never a senior, because he was home schooled and just joined the baseball team. I couldn't find any stats for Grayson County. That school also produced John Lackey, current Pirate Andy LaRoche, and former 40-man roster member Kevin Thompson. Beckman signed at the beginning of July and went to the GCL, where he was second on the team in innings. The starts and relief appearances don't mean much, as he actually averaged more innings in the latter. Overall he didn't pitch well, getting hit fairly hard and striking out few batters. He should be somewhere in short season ball in 2010.
