Bernero has generally been a very good pitcher at the AAA level, but he's been consistently terrible in numerous major league opportunities. The Tigers probably didn't do him a favor by rushing him to the majors. His rapid ascent and tendency to keep getting chances in the majors is surprising. He was drafted twice, in rounds 24 and 38, then wasn't drafted at all his last year in college and signed as a free agent. His main pitch is a sinker that reaches 91. He's had problems with gopher balls in the majors, allowing one every 6.5 IP. A sinkerball pitcher with low K and high HR rates is not likely to get very far. Bernero missed 2007 due to Tommy John surgery and the Pirates signed him after the season. He made it to Indianapolis for four starts in May and did fairly well considering the situation. He went back on the DL, though, and did not return. He'll probably try to continue his comeback elsewhere in 2009.
