Bishop played for Edmonds CC and Bellevue CC before attending Washington. He redshirted a year in junior college as the result of Tommy John surgery in 2005, so he should still have had a year of eligibility remaining, although he was listed as a senior when the Pirates drafted him. It looks like he was used as a mopup reliever at Washington, so the Pirates may have believed that he wasn't yet fully recovered from the surgery two years ago. He signed right after the draft and pitched in relief at State College. Except for a slightly high walk rate he did very well, fanning over a batter an inning. He started off 2008 in the Hickory bullpen and made a strong showing, with a high K rate and not many runners allowed. He was especially tough on RH hitters, holding them to a .183 average. Unfortunately, he missed much of July and August with an injury, but he had three scoreless outings after returning at the end of the year. The Pirates sent Bishop to the Hawaii Winter League, so they appear to be optimistic about him. He moved up to Lynchburg in 2009 and had a disappointing year. His WHIP was good and he didn't allow many long balls, so it seems likely some bad luck was involved in producing the bad ERA. He still appears to have potential, so the Pirates may move him up to AA next year.
