Another of the many college senior pitchers the Pirates drafted in 2005-07, Williams holds various school records, including career Ks.  He also was one of several very tall finesse pitchers the Pirates drafted in 2006, the others being Jared Hughes and Mike Crotta.  Although he was ostensibly his college team's #1 starter in 2006, the other two principal starters pitched better than he did.  He went to the GCL as part of the Pirates' puzzling policy of stocking that level with college players.  Williams throws an upper 80s fastball and relies mainly on location.  He pitched fairly well against the younger players there, but with a low K rate.  He finished the year at Williamsport and opened 2007 with State College.  He posted a low ERA there, but got hit fairly hard and didn't fan many hitters.  The ERA is misleading, though, as over a third of the runs he allowed (7 of 19) were unearned.  He had over twice as many ground outs as fly outs.  He also had a brief stint with Altoona when they were short of pitchers.   He opened 2008 in extended spring training, which unless he's hurt is a sign the new regime doesn't think highly of him.
