The Pirates signed Garcia in July 2008. He was old to
be signing his first pro contract, but Pirates' Latin American scouting
coordinator Rene Gayo seems to make an effort to scout players who may have
slipped through or blossomed late, an approach used to good effect by other teams such as Colorado. Garcia got into four GCL games late in the year. He opened 2009 back in the GCL and served as the primary closer. He allowed very few baserunners, although he also didn't fan many. The Pirates brought him up to State College for a couple of appearances after the GCL season ended. He could be at State College or West Virginia next year.
