Drese at one time was a power pitcher with a mid-90s fastball and good breaking stuff, although he had command problems. He's spent the last several years, however, trying to come back first from shoulder surgery in 2005 and elbow problems that caused him to miss nearly all of 2006. When he's been able to pitch in recent years, he's shown little of his old ability to miss bats. Even during his comeback attempt in independent ball prior to the Pirates signing him, he was very hittable and struck out few hitters. The Pirates signed him in late June of 2008, when they were running desperately short of starting pitchers in the upper minors due to injuries at the major league level. At that point Drese had pitched only 35 innings total in organized baseball since 2005, yet he went straight into the rotation in AAA. That lasted one bad start. Drese made a couple of appearances in the GCL in late August, probably trying to work his way back, and that was it. He'll probably move on.
