Fallon redshirted a year at Boston College in 2006, then
transferred to USC-Upstate. He played in 2007, sat out 2008, and played in
2009. The results for 2009 were pretty
horrific, so I have to wonder whether he was coming
back from an injury, but the school’s web site doesn’t specify why he
sat out 2008. All I can find is that he suffered an unspecified injury
late in the 2007 collegiate season and that he was rated by PGCrosschecker as
having the best velocity in the Southern Collegiate League, a summer league, in 2008.
The USC-Upstate web site says he throws 94 and has a good slider, and
that he pitched a lot better late in
the 2009 season, taking over as the team's closer (although
he had only one save). He seems to have some pretty severe control
problems in any
event, although he also fans a lot of hitters and allows very few extra-base hits. Fallon still had a year of eligibility left, but he signed with the Pirates not long after the draft and was assigned to State College. He pitched in short relief there and struggled with his control, walking a batter an inning. He wasn't that hard to hit, either. He's probably going to be a project.
