Fienemann was set to sign with a major league team as a 17-year-old who threw in the upper 80s, but he found he needed labrum surgery and the team withdrew its offer. After going through rehab he hit 90 in a workout with the Pirates and they signed him to a minor league deal. The signing was probably the first one for the team's new Australian scout, Tony Harris. Fienemann led the GCL Pirates in innings, which probably indicates the Pirates think he's a prospect. They undoubtedly like his size. He pitched well, better than his ERA indicates, although he didn't fan many. He may not have a well developed offspeed pitch yet. He should move up in 2010, possibly to State College.
