The Pirates drafted Oritz in 2005, when he was at the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, but didn't sign him. He had Tommy John surgery and the Pirates drafted him again, supposedly to follow him during the summer, but they signed him soon after the draft and sent him to the GCL. He didn't give up many hits, but had weak K and BB rates. Considering that he was coming off TJ surgery, it seemed like a good showing overall. Back in the GCL in 2007 he was just awful, which makes me wonder whether he was healthy. He pitched only twice in the season's final six weeks.
