Garavito pitched very well in the Venezuelan Summer League, but struggled in his brief GCL debut.  He did much better in 2004, although his BB and K rates were unimpressive.  He spent 2005 in the Hickory bullpen, getting hammered to the tune of a .314 opponents' BA.  He returned there and improved a great deal in 2006, giving up far fewer hits, although he still walked a lot of hitters.  He's a sinkerball pitcher who won't fan many hitters, but is a groundball pitcher (ground out to fly out ratio of 2.43 in 2006 and 1.91 in 2007), and has been slightly more effective against LH batters for the last several years.  With Lynchburg in 2007, he started off in the bullpen but ended up getting some starts due to injuries.  He was better in relief, with a 3.63 ERA vs. 4.66 as a starter.  His K rate continued dropping, so he may have reached about as high a level as he can manage effectively.  He's a useful pitcher as he gives them somebody who can fill in and take up some innings without imploding.  He was on the disabled list at the start of 2008, but should resume his role of class A fill-in pitcher once he's back.
