Holdzkom was considered a good prospect when he was with the Marlins, due mainly to a mid-90s fastball and a good curve.  Obviously, he's struggled a lot with his command.  He also has a history of clashes with his coaches, both in the pros and in junior college, when he was kicked off the team for insubordination.  Holdzkom made a lot of progress in 2003, but Tommy John surgery unfortunately cost him the 2004 season.  He continued to pitch well in class A after returning, but he's struggled at higher levels, as his K rate has rapidly gone south and he's allowed a lot of baserunners.  You have to wonder whether he's healthy.  Still, his arm is interesting enough that he's been selected twice in the Rule 5 draft, although he failed to stick either time.  The Pirates signed Holdzkom to a minor league contract for 2009.  He opened the season in the Altoona bullpen and struggled with his control.  He somehow managed not to allow any earned runs, but he did allow seven unearned runs.  In mid-May he went on the DL with shoulder tendonitis and didn't return.  He'll probably be elsewhere in 2010.
