Krebs was a 2004 Royals draft-and-follow, taken in the 36th round, but he didn't sign.  He throws 93-94, with a mid-80s cutter or slider.  The Pirates signed him in mid-July 2005.  He was a reliever in JC, but they put him in the rotation, possibly to get him more work.  He had one of the better arms at Williamsport, but struggled after debuting there, allowing a lot of hits and walking more than he fanned.  It's possible he wasn't healthy.  He started 2006 off in the GCL and pitched poorly, but moved up to Williamsport and did much better, which suggests he may have been rehabbing at Bradenton.  His control wasn't good, but he had a good K rate.  He struggled with LH batters in the NY-P, as they hit .283 against him, compared to .197 for RH batters.

Krebs spent 2007 at Hickory, starting the year in the rotation.  He struggled through five starts then went on the DL.  He didn't return until late July, after a rehab assignment in the GCL.  I've never seen any indication of any of the injury problems that Krebs seems to have had, but the Pirates have concluded that he's more likely to stay healthy pitching in relief.  He has a high-effort delivery that could be a factor.  Anyway, he showed good stuff at Hickory, fanning well over a batter an inning, but he had trouble with the strike zone.  His control problems weren't as drastic as, say, Mike Felix', so he might not be that far from establishing himself as a prospect.  His stuff is good enough and he impressed the team enough to get a promotion to Lynchburg.
