Leach pitched for Northwest Mississippi CC in 2007, then went to Southern Mississippi. His stats were both awful and disturbingly reminiscent of many of the college pitchers that the Pirates drafted to no purpose in the last several years of the disastrous tenure of former GM Dave Littlefield. Nevertheless, Baseball America ranked him, without explanation, as the 19th best prospect in Mississippi and he was drafted by the Royals in the 38th round in 2007. He signed and went to State College, where he was arguably the best pitcher on a horrific staff. Of course, that's not saying much and Leach's numbers weren't that good, especially his K rate. Surprisingly, his control was fine. He throws hard-around 92-93 in training camp-and also throws a change. He spent 2009 at West Virginia, initially pitching in relief and then starting for most of the second half. He performed well in both roles. His BB and K rates were much higher as a reliever; he fanned just under a batter an inning in relief and only about six per nine innings as a starter. He had a slight reverse platoon split. He should be at Bradenton in 2010, where there'll be a lot of candidates for the rotation.
