MacFarland
has a strong arm, but didn't take advantage of it in
college. He throws in the low 90s at times, but fell into the 80s during the 2006 season, and his fastball reportedly lacks movement. He has a good slider, but he's had control problems. He was more successful as a reliever in the Cape Cod League, so he probably projects better in the bullpen. MacFarland started his college career at Pace University but transferred when Pace dropped to Division II. The Pirates took a number of pitchers in the 2006 draft who didn't perform all that well in college, presumably because their scouts think they're good projects. They did the same thing in 2005, with no results so far beyond leaving the team very weak in pitching at the lower levels of the farm system. MacFarland signed quickly and pitched in relief at Williamsport. He
didn't allow many hits but obviously had serious control problems. He could return to that level or move up to Hickory in 2007.
