Machi seems to have turned things around in 2006 with his move to the bullpen. The step back in 2008 may have been injury-related, as he missed most of the first half of the season. His BB and K rates have been through some pretty severe ups and downs. He's a fastball-slider pitcher who's obviously had some weight problems. Machi originally signed with the Phillies, but went to Tampa Bay in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. He must have impressed somebody in the Blue Jays' organization in 2006, because Toronto signed him after that season as a free agent and placed him on the 40-man roster. The Jays released Machi after he struggled in 2008. A late-season altercation with his manager that resulted in him being sent home may also have played a role. The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2009. He was added to the Altoona roster part way into the season, then finished the year in the AAA bullpen. He had his best season so far, throwing strikes and keeping runners off the bases at both levels. He was equally effective against LH and RH batters in AAA, but in AA, according to the unofficial numbers at minorleaguesplits.com, LH batters hit .340 against him and RH only .164.  It's hard to see much of a ceiling, especially given the low K rates, but he still took a step forward.  He was eligible for minor league free agency after the season, but he re-signed with the Pirates.
