McPherson went to Faulkner State Community College before going to Mobile. He obviously didn't pitch well at Mobile. The Pirates had a habit in the last several years under Dave Littlefield of drafting college pitchers with poor performance track records. McPherson signed quickly and opened in the Gulf Coast League. He pitched well against the younger players there, although with a low K rate, but he got hammered in three late season starts for State College. Overall, he had trouble with LH batters. He returned to State College in 2008 and pitched well except for one problem: gopher balls. He allowed few baserunners and had an outstanding BB/K ratio, although not a good K rate, but he couldn't keep the ball in the park. It's not often you see a pitcher allow twice as many HRs as he does walks. McPherson had a reverse platoon split this time and, not surprisingly, was a flyball pitcher, with a groundout to air out ratio of 0.71.

McPherson started 2009 in extended spring training, but soon joined the West Virginia staff and pitched both as a starter and reliever. He wasn't overwhelming there, but his peripheral numbers, especially his WHIP, were better than his ERA and he cut way down on the HRs. When State College opened its season, he moved down to join its rotation. He improved greatly over 2008, with a much better K rate and, again, far fewer gophers. He also largely eliminated his platoon split. He's still a flyball pitcher, with a groundout to air out ratio of 0.62 for the entire season. He should return to West Virginia in 2010, but may face a lot of competition for rotation spots.
