The Pirates signed McSwain as a free agent late in the 2006 season. His career at Elon was interrupted during his sophomore year by Tommy John surgery. He evidently left school and was pitching in a summer league at the time the Pirates signed him. He was assigned to Bradenton and made two relief outings each in 2006 and 2007. He moved up to Hickory in 2007 when its struggling staff needed a body. He pitched better as a starter (4.91 ERA) than in relief (7.71), but not very well in either role. McSwain pitched in every possible role with the two class A teams in 2008, moving back and forth several times, and making some strides with his pitching.  He was much better as a reliever at Hickory and as a starter at Lynchburg, and was far better overall at Hickory.  He relies mainly on control and doesn't walk many hitters.  He'll start off at Lynchburg in 2009 and will probably serve as a swing man there and at Altoona, depending on need.
