Miller has had a surprisingly successful career considering that he first played in organized ball at age 26.  He's a submariner who, over the last several years in the majors, has been only slightly less successful against left-handed batters than against right-handed batters.  He's pitched consistently well as a major leaguer, but unfortunately has been healthy less and less often.  He had elbow surgery for a torn tendon in 2006 and missed time in 2007 with an elbow strain.  The Pirates obtained him from the Red Sox for a PTBNL.  At the time, he hadn't pitched, so he must have been recovering from further problems.  The Pirates acquired Miller when Sean Burnett was promoted to the majors, but an additional reason was probably the team's need for bullpen bodies.  If they can get Miller healthy, he might have a chance of helping out some.
