Thompson progressed slowly through the Padres' system. He's clearly an example of how higher round picks will get more chances than other minor leaguers, as he pitched poorly throughout his time in the low minors. He suddenly started having more success when he reached AA, although his peripherals have never been good. His K rate, especially, has always been very weak. Thompson was successful in all of his AA and AAA stints except 2007, when things apparently fell apart for some reason. The Pirates signed him as a minor league free agent and invited him to major league spring training. He's been a starter most of the time throughout his career except for his handful of outings for the Padres in 2007. He opened 2008 in the Indianapolis bullpen, but was ultimately used as a swing man. He missed May and June with an injury. Overall, he rebounded somewhat from his dismal 2007 season, but apart from a decent ERA his numbers were weak. He'll probably move on in 2009.
