Reichert had the misfortune to get drafted into the arm-chewing machine that was the Royals' organization in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Like many of the team's pitching prospects, he was rushed through the minors due to the Royals' difficulty in just finding enough arms to get through each season. He had other problems as well. When he was drafted he featured a low- to mid-90s fastball and a hard slider. By 1999, however, he had been diagnosed as a diabetic and then had his right arm broken by an Albert Belle line drive. His fastball was down in velocity even before that. He was somewhat effective in the majors in 2000, but his K/BB ratio was very bad and he pretty much fell off a cliff in 2001. He finally started getting straightened out in independent ball in 2006-07 and was pitching passably in AAA in 2008 after catching on with the Indians' organization. The Pirates acquired him with Ryan Mulhern for a PTBNL in July to fill a pitching shortage. He'd become expendable after the Indians acquired some minor league pitching in the C.C. Sabathia trade. The Pirates assigned him to AAA, but he started only one game there and then joined the Altoona rotation. He pitched about the same there as he had in AAA. He'll probably be elsewhere next year.
