Paulino pitched well in the DSL, so it's a little surprising
he didn't get a shot at the GCL sooner. Given a chance
in 2007, he struggled through eight relief appearances. He pitched very
well, though, in his two starts, which were also his last two games, allowing just
six hits and three walks in 12 IP, while fanning
14. He may have been getting over either an injury or acclimation problems. He had
a lot
of trouble with LH batters, who hit .340 against him compared
to .163 by RH batters. In 2008, he returned to the GCL and pitched well overall,
with great walk and K numbers but more hits
allowed than ideal. This time he had a reverse platoon split. He didn't pitch at all in August so he must have been hurt. In 2009 Paulino spent the season at State College and pitched well in starting and long relief roles. He had a higher groundout to air out ratio than the previous year, 1.47 to 1.04, and had only a mild platoon split. He seems to get a little better every year, but he's 23 now and didn't have a good K rate at State College. He should open 2010 at West Virginia. He may end up in the bullpen, as the Pirates have accumulated a lot of pitching prospects at the lower level.
