The Pirates claimed Taubenheim off waivers from Toronto in December 2007. When he was drafted, it looked like he was slated to be an organizational bullpen guy, but he pitched well enough that he was moved to the rotation. Toronto then acquired him along with Lyle Overbay and gave him a shot at the majors in 2006. He held his own that year, but struggled in AAA in 2007. Although he's a big guy, Taubenheim is a finesse pitcher who throws the four standard pitches, including a high 80s fastball, and generally gets them over the plate. He's generally sruggled with LH hitters, a pattern that continued in 2009. He didn't allow too many baserunners in the minors, but also never had a good K rate, so his ceiling is likely not high.

Taubenheim spent most of 2008 in the rotation at Indianapolis. He didn't fare well, with his BB and K rates both declining. Ironically, he pitched well in one emergency start for the Pirates. They released him at the beginning of September to make room for callups. He re-signed with the team, on a minor league deal, in January 2009. He served as a swing man and had a very solid year. With the Pirates having added a lot of pitching depth, his chances of ever getting called up are extremely low, so he may look for another team to sign with for 2010.
