Ortiz had a good year in Venezuela in 2006, but he was very old to be making his pro debut in that league. He didn't make the GCL roster in 2007 and instead dominated the VSL to an almost absurd degree. According to Rene Gayo, the Pirates' Director of Latin American Scouting, the Pirates regarded him as a good prospect, but since he was 21 it's hard to know whether that made any sense. Ortiz made a few appearances filling in as a reliever for Hickory, then joined the State College rotation, which in view of his age made more sense than him going to the GCL. He struggled, getting hit hard and also walking a lot of batters. He at least had a decent K rate. Ortiz spent 2009 pitching in relief at West Virginia, eventually being limited mainly to mopup roles. He obviously didn't do well in any respect, and he got worse as the season went on, posting ERAs of 6.19, 9.22 and 15.12 in June through August. He's an extreme flyball pitcher and had particular trouble with LH batters, who hit .343 against him. If he's back in 2010 it'll probably be in a similar role.
